Immediate Access to Crisis Intervention Services

Lewis & Clark Behavioral Health Services provides immediate, short term crisis intervention services to individuals who have mental health and/or substance use problems. Services are provided over the telephone and face to face 24/7 at our CORE Center. Crises are deeply subjective and can result from various factors, including reactions to trauma, overwhelming stress, thoughts of despair, self-harm, or substance-related risks. Our goal is to stabilize the behavioral health crisis as quickly as possible.

Our crisis intervention professionals are trained to manage on-site crisis triage assessments, whether voluntary or involuntary, for individuals of any age. They provide crisis stabilization for mental health, intoxication, and detox-related issues. And we staff a 24/7 crisis hotline that South Dakotans can call any time for help.

What to Expect in Crisis Care

We are committed to offering responsive care to guide you through a mental health or substance use crisis. You will be asked questions to help determine your safety and to gain permission to talk with your family members, community supporters and providers. LCBHS staff will work with you to develop a plan to resolve the crisis. The plan will typically involve the utilization of family or other support as well as services to address any identified needs.

Specialized Crisis Services and Support

Residential Crisis Stabilization

Our residential crisis stabilization program offers a safe and supportive environment for individuals who are experiencing acute mental health crises. Designed to provide immediate intervention and support during times of distress, our short-term residential program offers a vital bridge between community-based care and inpatient hospitalization.

Rural Behavioral Health Crisis Outreach Program

David Dracy, Ph.D. provides counseling services to individuals, families and others affected by the current agricultural crisis. Dr. Dracy is a psychologist who specializes in rural behavioral health issues. A critical program component is the provision of immediate care for individuals in acute crisis related to serious problems such as depression or suicide.

Inpatient Care

Psychiatric inpatient care is provided based on a referral to the South Dakota Human or to one of the regional private inpatient psychiatric care providers. A 30-day medically monitored inpatient substance use disorder treatment program is available and the unit specializes in the treatment those with a substance use disorder and co-occurring mental illness.

Other Crisis Support

LCBHS crisis care staff is trained in procedures for involuntary hospitalization of individuals who are a danger to themselves or others because of a mental illness or substance use disorder. If necessary, crisis care staff can assist in these procedures. We understand the complexity and sensitivity of these situations and use the utmost care and professionalism.
